The 1st set of teeth, or milk-teeth as they're called, are 20 in number ; they typically appear in pairs, and those of the lower jaw typically predate the matching ones of the higher. The first of the milk-teeth is in general cut about the 6th or 7th month, and the last of the set at numerous periods from the twentieth to the thirtieth months. So the entire period occupied by the first dentition might be conjectured at from a year and a half to 2 years. The method varies in different people, both as to its entire duration, and as to the periods and order in which the teeth make their appearance. It is nonessential, to add more on this point.

Their developement is a normal activity. It is too often rendered a distressing and tricky one, by blunders in the management of the program and health of the child, formerly to the approaching of the teeth, and in the process itself. So , customarily in effect of injudicious management, it is created the most urgent period of adolescence. Not that I think the scale of mortality fairly traceable to it, is by any means so great as has been stated ; for it is rated as high as one 6th of all the kids who bear it. Still, nobody doubts that first dentition is commonly a period of real danger to the infant. It so becomes a crucial query to a nervous and loving ma, the way the hazards and problems of teething can in any degree be reduced, or, if at all possible, altogether stopped.

One or two hints on this subject, then, may be helpful. I shall consider, first, the management of the child, when teething is accomplished without difficulty ; and, second, the management of the child when it is attended with difficulty. In the kid of a healthy constitution, that has been correctly, that is, naturally, fed, on the milk of its mummy alone, the symptoms attending teething will be of the most gentle kind, and the management of the child most straightforward and straightforward. Symptoms:- the signs of natural dentition ( which this is going to be reasonably called ) are, an increased flow of spit, with swelling and heat of the gums, and sometimes flushing of the cheeks.
